Pulper Pit Press
Handmade Paper
Pulper Pit Press was launched to answer the paper demand of Miniatura Artchemy; an interactive illustration and watercolor pop-up I run for free at events. It only took a few gigs to realize that the most expensive thing I give away is the paper. In an effort to remedy this, I started recycling my own fine art scrap. By definition, a "pulper pit" is waste from the paper-making process that is often re-pulped and recirculated. Roughly, this is what I do—only on a much smaller, singularly accountable scale. Speaking of accountability, you may have encountered rapid ink spread or rough and "toothy" handmade papers. I make these, too. However, I also make papers that are: 1) treated with arrowroot sizing, a gluten-free starch that helps minimize the spread of ink and paint. 2) hand-burnished to smooth out the texture, making it more compatible for drawing, writing, and block printing.
